Information for Garfield County Residents

COLORADO SENATE BILL 25-003 ESTABLISHES NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PURCHASE OF CERTAIN SPECIFIED SEMIAUTOMATIC FIREARMS (SSF) IN COLORADO

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

To purchase a firearm covered under this law, you must first obtain a Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card (SSF EC) through your local sheriff’s office.

PROCESS TO ACQUIRE A SSF CARD AFTER AUGUST 1, 2026:

  1. Complete an application, background check & ID verification; submitted and reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office.
  2. If approved, the Sheriff’s Office will issue you a Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card (SSF EC).
  3. Sign up for the appropriate Firearm Safety Training through a VERIFIED INSTRUCTOR.
  4. Take the course and pass a written test with 90% or higher.
  5. Go to a Federal Firearms Licensed (FLL) dealer & purchase/transfer desired SSF’s.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS TO PURCHASE SPECIFIED SEMIAUTOMATIC FIREARMS:

  • Training requirements depend on your background:
    1. You must have your Hunters Education credentials verified in CPW’s (Colorado Parks and Wildlife) records system.
    2. If you have an approved Hunters Education Training:
      • 4-hour Firearms Safety Training Course required.
    3. If you do NOT have an approved Hunters Education training:
      • 12-hour Firearms Safety Course required.

EXISTING OWNERSHIP

  • The law does not affect individuals who already own an SSF before August 1, 2026, nor does it ban use of existing firearms.
