Rabies Vaccination Requirement

  • All dogs, cats and ferrets are required to be vaccinated against rabies when the animal reaches the age of three months.

Licensing of Dogs in Unincorporated Garfield County

  • Many of the area veterinarians also sell licenses.

Control

  • Dogs in unincorporated Garfield County must be within the control of a responsible person.  (Verbal or physical.
  • Dogs not under control are considered at large.
  • Leashes may be required within some municipalities and state parks.

Livestock & Wildlife

  • It is unlawful to fail to control any animal so as to prevent it from running after, chasing, biting, attacking or in any way threatening or worrying livestock or wildlife.
  • Any animal threatening livestock or wildlife may be immediately destroyed or impounded and upon conviction of the owner/s, the animal may be destroyed by court order and the owner/s may be required to pay restitution for damages that may have occurred.

Quarantine

  • Any dog or cat which is known to have bitten or injured any person, so as to cause an abrasion to the skin, shall be quarantined for 10 days at a location chosen by the Sheriff’s Office.

Animal Noise & Care

  • It is unlawful for any owner to fail to prevent his pet animal from disturbing the peace of any other person by habitual or persistent barking, howling, yelping, whining or any other noise, whether the animal is on or off the owner’s property. (One hour or more.)
  • It is unlawful for any owner to permit the accumulation of a pet animal’s feces.

Owner’s Duty to Redeem Animal & Pay Fees

  • It shall be unlawful for any Owner to fail to make financial arrangements for the redemption or surrender of any animal, including medical treatment and boarding, and such costs shall be fully paid prior to release of the animal.

Impoundment or Quarantine Fee

Thirty Dollars ($30.00) for each calendar day in which the animal is in impound or quarantined.
