POLICY / PROCEDURE
GENERAL
SUBJECT: LIGHT DUTY ASSIGNMENTS
EFFECTIVE DATE: January 01, 2004
POLICY:

light duty assignments as a temporary means of providing for an employee
to contribute to the function of the department while recovering from a
non-duty or duty related injury or illness.
PURPOSE:

with temporary duty assignments while recovering from a non-duty or duty
related injury or illness.
DEFINITIONS:
• Light Duty: Duty performed by an employee who is recovering from a
long term, non-duty or duty related injury or illness.

right, but a privilege. Light Duty assignments must meet the needs of
the agency at the time requested. A light duty position may be assigned
in any division. Light duty assignments may or may not be available at
the time of request and are given on first come, first serve basis and
must be approved by the Sheriff or his designee.
Light Duty Duration: If light duty is authorized, it shall not
exceed a total period of 12 weeks from date of illness or injury, in
conjunction with FMLA and workers compensation. A medical statement will
be required from the employee’s health care provider confirming the
anticipated release. Personnel will be paid at their normal base salary.
